On soil under trees dominated by Quercus and Picea.
Pileus convex with a depressed center, purplish brown, conspicuously scaly, covered with brown to dark brown, erect, pointed scales arranged more or less concentrically, and less erect toward margin. Hymenophore pinkish, spines decurrent, crowded. Stipe subcylindrical, enlarging downward, pale brown when young, darkening in age, dry, smooth, typically hollow at maturity. Context whitish.
